Beginning next month, the Meta Quest 3 and 3S mixed reality headsets will be accessible to the general public as a preview of Microsoft's operating system.
Do you want your VR headset to run Windows 11? Soon, a formal Microsoft-Meta partnership will make it possible. At its Ignite conference today, Redmond revealed that the Meta Quest 3 and 3S mixed reality headsets will be made available to the public as a preview beginning next month.
The feature will allow Meta Quest users to stream the Windows 11 experience from their local PC or the cloud-based Windows 365 service, though Microsoft has not yet disclosed all the specifics.
"Using a Quest headset to access your local Windows PC or Windows 365 Cloud PC is easy, and connecting to a private, large, multiple-monitor workstation only takes a few seconds," the company wrote in a blog post.
Instead of just using mixed reality headsets for gaming and entertainment, Microsoft and Meta want to turn them into instruments for productivity. Users of Quest, for instance, will be able to extend their Windows 11 experience beyond a single laptop screen to include three virtual monitors within the headset. Furthermore, the Quest 3 and 3S will superimpose the Windows desktop on the wearer's actual surroundings.
Users of Meta Quest may already utilize third-party programs to stream or connect a desktop PC to their headsets. Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, hinted to the Microsoft cooperation in September, saying it will provide more seamless capabilities for the entire Windows 11 experience.
According to Zuckerberg's demo at the Meta Connect conference, Quest users will simply need to "look at their keyboard" on a Windows 11 PC for the headset to begin pairing and streaming the Windows experience into their headset.
Zuckerberg continued, "Quest will be a logical extension of your PC."
